Ontario Hockey Federation Honours the Legacy of Hockey Icon Bill Hay

The Ontario Hockey Federation (OHF) joins the hockey community in mourning the passing of esteemed Hockey Hall of Famer Bill Hay, who passed away on Friday at the age of 88. Born in Lumsden, Saskatchewan, Hay’s legacy in hockey spans decades of dedication both on the ice and as a leader in the sport.

Bill Hay's Career Highlights

  • Began his hockey journey with the Regina Pats >> later joined the Chicago Blackhawks.
  • 8 seasons with the Blackhawks, earning the NHL’s Rookie of the Year award in 1959-60 and contributing to the team’s Stanley Cup victory in 1961.
  • After retiring, focused on hockey development across North America, including:
    • President and COO of Hockey Canada
    • Chair of the Hockey Hall of Fame
    • President and CEO of the Calgary Flames
    • Founder of the D.K. (Doc) Seaman Hockey Resource Centre
  • Key role in the merger of Hockey Canada and the Canadian Amateur Hockey Association.
  • Established the Bill Hay Future Leaders Program: creating career opportunities for university and college graduates
  • 2015: Inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame 
  • 2021: Honoured with the Order of Hockey in Canada for his significant contributions to the sport.
  • Member of multiple halls of fame, including:
    • Alberta Hockey Hall of Fame
    • Saskatchewan Hockey Hall of Fame
    • Saskatchewan Sports Hall of Fame
