Green Armband Initiative: Leading the Way for Respect in Ontario Hockey
Date: Oct, 22, 2024 12:00 PM EDT
Ontario Hockey Federation (OHF) Members and Associations are stepping up to promote respect and sportsmanship through the Green Armband Initiative. This awesome program is all about creating a positive and respectful hockey environment, with a special focus on how we treat young officials. When refs under 18 sport the green armband, it’s a signal to everyone—players, coaches, fans—that these young refs deserve some extra respect and consideration.
Coming Together Across Ontario
The initiative is getting big love from local associations and each region is adding its own twist! From Toronto all the way up to Northern Ontario, minor hockey are promoting the why the green armband matters and why protecting young refs from pressures is so important.
"This initiative is key to building a culture of respect," says Adam Morell, the OHF Coordinator of Officiating (and an Official himself!). "Our young officials are a huge part of the game, and it’s up to us to make sure they feel confident and respected."
Spreading the Word
To keep the momentum going, the Members have recruited some of their hockey heroes—players and refs—to serve as ambassadors. These officials are sharing their experiences and explaining how much a positive environment helped them thrive in their roles. Their stories are raising awareness and changing attitudes across the hockey world.
Seeing Results
So far, the feedback has been super positive. Associations say their young referees are feeling more confident and empowered. As the Green Armband Initiative continues to spread across the province, Ontario is leading the way in making hockey rinks more respectful, inclusive, and supportive for everyone!
