Battle of the OHL at the 2024 Memorial Cup

Josh Bloom's goal with 22 seconds left in the third period secured a 4-3 win over the London Knights, giving the Saginaw Spirit their first Memorial Cup championship in franchise history. The Spirit dominated early, outshooting London 13-1 in the first period and 24-6 by the end of the second, leading 3-0 before the Knights rallied to tie the game.

Bloom's decisive goal came during a scramble, beating Michael Simpson and making Saginaw the first American OHL team to win a Memorial Cup title.

  • Owen Beck scored two first-period goals, earning the Stafford Smythe Memorial Trophy as Memorial Cup MVP with five points in the tournament.
  • Joey Willis added to Saginaw’s lead in the second period before London mounted a comeback with goals from Kasper Halttunen, Easton Cowan and Sam Dickinson.

The Spirit allowed just 13 shots, the fewest in a Championship Final in 25 years.

OHL Commissioner David Branch, retiring this summer after 45 years, presented the Memorial Cup to Saginaw captain Braden Haché. The Spirit and Knights were the fifth OHL teams to meet in the Memorial Cup Final, with Saginaw becoming the third straight tournament host to win.
