The Leamington Minor Hockey system dates back to the 1950s after the construction of the Leamington Recreation and Agricultural Centre in 1955. During the mid 1970s, players from Wheatley and surrounding area were able to break away and form the Wheatley Minor Hockey Association, playing out of the Wheatley Area Arena. In 1993-94, both systems came back together under the umbrella of the Southpoint Minor Hockey Association. They now play out of the Nature Fresh Farms Recreation Centre, built in 2000, which offers two ice pads and a massive recreation complex including gyms and swimming pools. The Leamington area has many highlights such as Point Pelee National Park, Hillman Marsh Conservation Area and is just an hour’s drive from Caesars Windsor and the U.S. border crossing. Point Pelee represents the southernmost tip of the Canadian mainland. In the hockey world, Leamington/Southpoint has produced several NHL players along the way, beginning with Floyd Hillman and followed by Brad Selwood, Randy Manery, Kirk Bowman, Kris Manery, Pat Ribble, Tim Hrynewich, Darren McCarty and Hayden Hodgson. Indeed a long hockey history for the Tomato Capital of Canada.
For the 22-23 hockey season, Essex Minor Hockey and Southpoint Minor Hockey have rostered combined teams to represent both centres under the ESP (Essex-Southpoint) name. As of January 23rd 2023, EMHA and SPMHA have submitted an application for amalgamation of REP programs and are awaiting OMHA approval.
